Episode 32: Disney's Fantastic Four: Arcade Edition

The Game Awards and Playstation Experience happened, and with them came announcements from Capcom, Sony, and Nintendo. The boys talk about these announcements with sense of urgency that only The Dark Souls of Podcasts can give you.

Also, Disney bought much of Fox (Helloooo!!! Comic book character rights) but we didn't know that before we recorded this. So Max pitched Disney's Fantastic Four.

Top 5 Marvel & DC Characters

Hello Listeners!! This post is a companion for our 30th episode where we talk our top 5 Marvel and DC characters. It's a reading list (Boo, Reading!) for those that wanted to seek out a little more info on each of the characters we mentioned.

Max's List

Green Arrow

Archer’s Quest
A great book that follows up Kevin Smith's Quiver. Filled great action Green Arrow travels across the country again, giving a great look into the past of G.A. with an eye on his future.
The Kill Machine
This is the book that single-handedly saved Green Arrow from the scrap pile; before this run in the new 52 Green Arrow was a mockery of his former self. Jeff Lemire crafts an interesting story filled with shadowy cults and high stakes business- add in a dash of family drama. It’s a fantastic read for anyone interested in a Green Arrow that's a bit younger and still discovering who he is as a hero.

Black Bolt
Inhuman (Marvel Knights)
What can I say about this fantastic book? Aside from the fact that everyone should read it… It's the quintessential book about the Inhumans. It's also considered by many to be one of the best Marvel books of all time. It offers you an insight into an unfamiliar world of Kings and Queens set in a futuristic city just outside the grasp of everyday life in the Marvel universe.
Black Bolt (2017)
A great book from Marvel that's getting lost in a sea of interchangeable heroes & villains. This book places Black Bolt, the monarch of the Inhumans, in an intergalactic space prison with no hope of escape. Christian Ward’s art is weird and fits perfectly with the writing of Saladin Ahmed who captures Black Bolt’s powerful voice better than anyone else I've read.

Dick Grayson

Batman: The Black Mirror
An amazing book written by Scott Snyder. This is a collection of the issues from detective comics after Dick has taken up the cowl in the stead of Bruce after his apparent death by the hands of Darkseid. This shows Dick struggling and coming to terms with his decision to become Batman.
Nightwing (DC Rebirth)
The current run of Nightwing shows Dick getting back to the basics in his classic Nightwing costume, while heading back to the rough and tough city of Blüdhaven. It's a great starting point for anyone trying to get into the stories of one Dick Grayson.

Ms. Marvel (Kamala Khan)

Ms. Marvel
She only had one book where she is the main character and it's freaking amazing G. Willow Wilson crafts a modern tale for anyone honestly. It's just so relatable. It's about a young Pakistani girl trying to make her way in the world of the super heroes she so admires.
Secret Warriors
This is a newer title that started during the Secret Empire event. It's a team full of Inhumans, including Ms. Marvel, and S.H.I.E.L.D. star Daisy Johnson starting a rebel fighting force. The interaction between these two is really fun. It's great for any of you fellow Inhumans fans out there.

Iron Fist

The Immortal Iron Fist
A great book for world building. Before this book I felt like Iron Fist was incredibly underdeveloped. The creative team really delved into the lineage of what it means to be the Iron Fist Also the art is absolutely fantastic.
Power Man and Iron Fist
A quirky book with a great sense of humor and great free flowing visuals. I seriously laughed my ass off with this series and was sad to see it end as these characters belong together.

Andrew’s List

Dr. Doom

Books of Doom
Ed Brusker crafted an origin story for one of the greatest Marvel characters (Let’s not talk about the movies, please). I know what you may be saying, “Jack Kirby and Stan Lee gave us a great origin story” and that’s fine, Books of Doom sets out to supplement it and fill  in the blanks for us. The best thing about this series is that it is short, well written, and gives us an introduction to Doom that paints him in a rather complex light. He is not just good or evil, it is far deeper than that, and that's what makes this a great read.
Infamous Iron Man
After essentially becoming God and living with the guilt of that, Victor Von Doom sets out to make up for his past. The Dream Team of Brian Micheal Bendis and Alex Maleev. Using the persona of Iron Man (Tony Stark’s body is in a coma at this point, and operates as an AI; Comics.) to show that he’s a changed man. Though over the 12 issue story Doom is constantly doubted by many characters in the Marvel Universe, and it’s how he demonstrates his change that makes this book a real page turner.

Jesse Custer
Preacher
Jesse Custer’s strong senses of right and wrong make him the ideal host for an entity with no individual will. Genesis, the spawn of angel and demon has possessed Jesse as he is preaching to his congregation, subsequently killing his congregation. Preacher is a road trip comic set in the 90s. Where Jesse, his ex-girlfriend Tulip, and their vampire buddy Cassidy traveling across the U.S.A. looking for God and answers.

Daredevil
The Man Without Fear
At this point, Daredevil had spent a decade being Batman: dark, brooding, and with no sign of change. Writer Mark Waid and artist Paolo Rivera set out to change just that, and boy, did they. Matt Murdock smiling adds quite a dimension to the character, for once he is easy going. But that doesn’t mean his adversaries make it any easier on him.

Thor
Thor (2007)
This is the kind of book that makes people ecstatic for super heroes. Ragnarok has happened, as it does cycle after cycle. We Thor’s spirit possess Dr. Donald Blake (Thor is a little different in the MCU flicks) yet again. The two of them work to rebuild Asgard, in Oklahoma. You see ThorBlake travel the world looking for his old friends, and dealing with a world that might not want the Asgardians anymore. This book will make you laugh, and definitely a little sad.
The Unworthy Thor (2016)
Thor is unworthy of his trusty hammer, Mjolnir. Odinson’s (This guy has a lot of names) quest to become worthy throws him out in space where he learns of another Mjolnir. But, of course, Thor isn’t the only being looking for the hammer. Jason Aaron crafted a story with the highest highs and lost hopes. It’s also got Beta Ray Bill and he alone is reason enough for you to check it out.

Kitty Pryde

Guardians of the Galaxy: New Guard
Wait, what? I thought this was a Star Lord book!! Well, it is, but Peter Quill has left the team and gone to be the Emperor of the Spartax. Rocket Raccoon is the new leader of our lovable guardians, and he’s got Groot, Drax, Kitty Pryde, and newcomer Ben “The Thing” Grimm at his side. Kitty comes in and does a great job of filling out the role of Star Lord, while staying very much herself.

Astonishing X-Men: Kitty Pryde - Shadow & Flame
This book features our title character and her friend Lockheed going to Japan. Ninjas and Dragons galore, but they’re the least of the pairs worries. Luckily Kitty has some ninja skills thanks to her time in the past being possessed by the demon Ogun. It’s not so heavy on the mystery, though there is one. This book really just exudes fun for me.
